Pearson has made some fascinating discoveries about how people process the world as it is, and where they are in their own awareness. The book’s primary thrust is to “look at the wisdom of the self.” Like a lot of people, Pearson has a hard time letting go of the past, but he doesn’t stop there. The difference between modes of self-awareness and modes of being aware of one’s own thoughts and feelings, such as moods, is that the latter are not just conscious, but they involve the capacity to make deliberate choices. Some people are aware of their moods, moods of anger, and moods of fear all the time. Others are aware of only certain moods, such as anger.

If you’re aware of your moods, moods of anger, and moods of fear all the time, you might notice that some people are more aware of them than others. The person with full emotional awareness would undoubtedly choose to be in control of her emotions, but would be able to be in control of them.

In one of our studies, we found that people who have a stronger ability to exercise self-awareness are more likely to be in control of their emotions than are people without self-awareness. One of the reasons people who are self-aware use their emotions for positive outcomes is because they don’t have to use everything they have control over. They have to exercise their self-awareness and make sure that what they are aware of is good for them.
