This is the exact opposite of what I was thinking. I really don’t think anyone would consider having the best communication portfolio a sign of a successful person. And the fact that so many people in the communication field make so much money is just plain weird. If you are going to make a living as a communication specialist, you have to make a lot of money.
Well, not in the same way as I do. I mean, I have my own company, and I do my own marketing pretty much all the time. And I have a couple of consulting clients that make money on a regular basis. But I am a communications specialist, and I work with a lot of different departments within the company. I guess I make more money than most people in the field.
The problem is that communication specialists are often paid based on the volume of their work. You can’t be a communications specialist and make a living at that. You have to keep doing what you do because it’s what you do. And sometimes it’s the job that you do that is the thing that makes you money. Like the time I worked for a company that was building a new satellite dish. They had been doing this for a few years but they were starting to make big bucks.
That company, with the good name of Space X, was building a satellite that would allow people to have a satellite dish that was essentially a high definition TV. They needed someone to build it, but someone didn’t have the skills. So the company hired a communications specialist. When I heard this the message in my head was “Hey! You know this guy isn’t gonna sell you a satellite dish. Let him build it for you”.
The company’s CEO, Chris Nelson, went to all the right people at Dish and they hired him. Of course, they didn’t have the skills to build a satellite dish so they just hired the communications specialist to do it. We can imagine that as Dish was building the dish, the company was also slowly building its own satellites so Dish was able to make more money.
There is a huge difference between a specialist and a communications specialist. The former is someone who works on a specific task. The latter is someone who works to build the communications infrastructure that will allow a company to communicate with the rest of the world. Dish may have been able to hire a communications specialist but its CEO has to pay the rest of the company’s salary and the rest of his salary is to work on the dish.
