Over the course of my years at bw consulting I have learned it is best to focus each day on a certain goal or “level” of awareness. The first day I wake up, I am usually in a state of “welcome to the business”. The second day I am in my “work” mode. Then the third day I am in “life” mode.
This is what makes it so powerful. Because you can’t just wake up one morning and decide you’re going to do something. You have to go through the things you need to do on the business day to get to that state of awareness. That is, if you’ve read the three previous paragraphs, you’re already in life mode.
I can’t stress that enough. You might be thinking that the way I’m thinking about it is a little more “out there,” but I promise you that there is a level of awareness that we’ve all experienced. It’s one that we can all relate to. I’ve talked about it enough, but I want to give a few examples.
One of my favorite personal examples came in the form of a friend and I having the same exact conversation every day. We would talk about the various things we wanted to do and we would end up doing them. We were so excited, that we would do whatever was needed to get there.
In this analogy, it is the way we talk about something that is similar to the way you think about it. One of my favorite examples of that comes from my own experience. I have two houses and a lot of things I want to do in my next one, but I never have the same excitement or enthusiasm as I do in my other one. I would get excited and excited until something would happen that would turn me off.
I know what you’re thinking. “But you just said you can’t remember any of your childhood dreams, so what’s the big deal?” Well, that’s exactly what I mean. It is the way we talk about something when we aren’t very excited about it, and it can often be the same way we talk about things in our lives. Like the way we talk about what we should do to save the world.
I am sure that when I was a kid I had many dreams of being a good person, but I also had many dreams of being a bad person and killing others. That is not something that we want to talk about. The best way to get over something is to talk about it and then you’ll forget it. You’ll forget the first time you see it and then the second time you see it. You can’t remember it.
That goes for all the “what to do” questions. Everyone has their own list, but here are four ways to take your fears and fears about not doing your best and turn them into your best possible self.
