The ability to take a job, do it well, and then look forward to finding a new employment is often associated with an individual’s self-reliance and independence. In this video, we discuss the concept of self-reliance, or independence, and how you can apply it to your ability to perform jobs that you are certain you will be able to perform.
The concept of being able to perform a job well is an inherently self-reliant idea. People who are able to take a job often feel it’s this freedom to do whatever they want and have a job, even if it just involves washing dishes or fixing a flat tire. It’s that sense of independence that is often associated with a job even if it isn’t directly tied to the ability to perform the job successfully.
Well, not all jobs require a certain level of physical ability. Some jobs require only the ability to read and write. But there are jobs that require the ability to solve problems. That means that if you want to be a good teacher you must know a few facts about the science behind the subjects you teach. A good mechanic must know the difference between a good and a bad engine. A good driver must know how to drive a car. And so on. So some jobs are easier than others.
It doesn’t matter how difficult your job is—when you are a good worker, you are a worker. When you are a good listener, you are a listener. When you’ve got a good memory, you are a memory. When you’ve got a problem to solve, you’re a problem solver.
All those are skills that we all have. It just matters that we know how to use them. In fact, the only thing that matters is how well we use that skill. A good teacher might get a lot of praise from her students, but it takes a good teacher to be able to impart that praise in a way that works for everyone.
In my opinion, there are two types of people. The first type wants more than what they got. They want more than being a good listener, a good problem solver, or a good teacher. The second type wants less than what they got. They want less than being a good worker, a good listener, or a good problem solver. They want less than being a good listener, a good problem solver, or a good teacher.
I see a lot of first year college students who are the first to get laid off, who are the first to graduate, or the first to feel the need to move into a new city. They have no idea what they lack in life. They have no idea what they’d like to do, or how to achieve. They are so unsure of their value, or what they’ve become, that they don’t even know what it means to be employed.
A good listener is someone who helps people see what theyve got to offer. A good problem solver helps people see what theyve got to do, or how to do it. A good teacher helps people see what theyve got to learn, or how to learn.
To be employed, you have to be a good listener, a good problem solver, and a good teacher. It might be the same person, or it might be a different person, but you need to feel comfortable with them and know what you need to say. A good interviewer is someone who asks the right questions so you get a good job interview.
